APPLE CRUMBLE INGREDIENTS
More details about the ingredients and measurements are in the recipe card below!
Apples: The star of the dish, apples lend this dessert its natural sweetness and fruity flavor. Remember, using different types of apples can give your crumble a complexity of textures.
All-purpose flour: This is used to thicken the apple filling, guaranteeing that it is not too runny. For the topping, it helps create a crumbly texture. You could also mix it with whole wheat flour.
Lemon Juice: This not only prevents the apples from browning but it also adds a bit of tartness, enhancing the overall flavor.
Rolled Oats: Used in the topping, they add a delightful crunch and make the crumble more filling.
Brown Sugar: Used in the topping, it gives a rich, molasses-like sweetness and creates a beautiful golden color when baked.
Butter: The fat in this recipe gives it a beautiful buttery flavor and helps bind the crumble topping together.
HOW TO MAKE APPLE CRUMBLE FROM SCRATCH
Step 1
Prepare your apples by peeling and cutting them into cubes. Once done, place the apple cubes in your baking pan. Add the remaining filling ingredients to the apples in the baking pan. Mix well to combine.
Step 2
Let the mixture sit for about three minutes to allow the apples to release their juices. After three minutes, give the mixture another good stir.
Step 3
Preheat your oven to a temperature of about 350 or 180C. This prepares it for baking the apple crumble.
Step 4
Add all the topping ingredients except the butter to a bowl and mix well.
Step 5
Add the butter to the previous ingredients and rub it with your fingers until it is well incorporated.
Step 6
Sprinkle the prepared topping over the apples. Make sure to cover all the apple pieces with the crumble topping.
Step 7
Place the baking pan in your preheated oven and bake the apple crumble for about thirty minutes.
Step 8
Remove the baking pan from the oven once the baking time is up. Allow the apple crumble to cool slightly.
Serve your apple crumble warm, ideally with a scoop of ice cream. This dessert is best enjoyed fresh from the oven.
👩🏽🍳 PRO TIPS
Make Ahead: For a time-saving tip, prepare your apple crumble ahead of time. You can cover the apples with the topping, wrap it up, and refrigerate it overnight. When you're ready, just pop it in the oven!
Variety is Key: To make your apple crumble extra special, try using more than one type of apple. Mixing different apple varieties will give your dessert an exciting range of textures.
Flour Mix: For an interesting twist, consider combining all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour for the topping. This not only adds a nutty flavor but also enhances the texture.
Preheat the Oven: Always preheat your oven for at least twenty to thirty minutes before baking. This helps make sure that your apple crumble topping comes out crispy and flaky.
Perfect Pairing: For the ultimate experience, serve your apple crumble warm with a scoop of ice cream. The contrast of the hot, sweet apples and the cold, creamy ice cream is simply irresistible.
Enhance Flavors: Don't rush the filling preparation. Let the apples release their juices for a few minutes after mixing with the filling ingredients. This will allow the flavors to meld together beautifully.
Texture Tip: When making the topping, rub the butter into the ingredients using your fingertips. This technique helps to create a lovely, crumbly texture that's just perfect for apple crumble.
GREAT CRUMBLE VARIATIONS
Try different nuts: If you're a fan of nuts, this variation is for you. Replace the chopped walnuts in the topping with your favorite nuts like almonds, pistachios, or pecans. This not only adds a different crunch but also gives the crumble a unique flavor profile.
Spice it up: For those who love a blend of spices, try adding a teaspoon of ginger powder along with the cinnamon and nutmeg. This not only enhances the overall flavor but also adds a warm and spicy kick to your apple crumble.
Fruit medley: Why stick to just apples when you can add more fruits? Try adding pears or slices of peach to the apple filling. This will not only add a different texture but also a sweet and tangy flavor to your crumble.
Use frozen fruits: If fresh fruits are not available, no worries. You can use canned fruit. Drain it from the syrup. Alternatively, you can also use frozen fruits. Just thaw them before use and adjust the sugar level according to your taste.
