Pro Tips for Perfect Tuna Bread Rolls

  • Go easy on the salt: Tuna and cream cheese can be salty already, so adjust accordingly.
  • Customize the size: Want mini rolls? Divide the dough into smaller portions for bite-sized delights.
  • Dough too sticky?: Add a touch of flour while kneading until it’s manageable but still soft.
  • Adjust the amount of veggies: Add more or less. Some of my family members are not fond of bell peppers, so I reduced the amount, but the rolls still turned out great.

Variations

  • Cheesy Tuna Rolls: Add some shredded mozzarella or cheddar to the filling for a cheesy surprise. The kids will love it.
  • Spicy Tuna Rolls: Mix in chopped jalapeños or a pinch of chili flakes to the tuna filling for some heat. My Indian readers can add Kashmiri mirch!
  • Vegetarian Option: Swap the tuna for mashed chickpeas or tofu seasoned with your favorite spices.
  • Herby: Fresh herbs like dill or parsley give a refreshing twist.

Instructions

Make the Filling:

  • In a medium bowl, mix together the drained tuna, black pepper, lemon juice, cream cheese, onion, bell pepper, carrot, and salt. Set it aside. Easy, right?

Prepare the Dough:

  • In a separate bowl, mix the warm water, yeast, and sugar until combined.
  • Add in the flour, oil, butter, and salt. Knead it until you have a smooth dough. Cover and let it rise for 45 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Knead the dough again for a minute and divide it into seven equal balls (around 50g each).

Shape the Rolls:

  • Roll each dough ball into a 7×5-inch rectangle. Make long cuts on one half, leaving about half an inch uncut at the bottom.
  • Add two tablespoons of the tuna filling on the uncut side. Roll it up and place the seam down to prevent it from opening.
  • Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover and let the rolls proof for 20-30 minutes.

Bake:

  • Brush the rolls with egg wash for a golden crust.
  • Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 13-15 minutes. Once baked, brush them with melted butter for that extra shine.

Notes

  • Use good quality canned tuna, and make sure to drain it.
  • It’s best to use unsalted butter for the dough.
  • You can replace the tune with another protein, like cooked chicken.
  • Always preheat the oven for at least 30 minutes before baking.
  • Add more veggies like corn, beans, or olives.
