🥘 INGREDIENTS YOU'LL NEED
With some simple ingredients, you’ll quickly be able to whip up the sandwich of your dreams!
You can scroll down to the recipe card for further details and instructions.
Steak: Having the right cut of steak will give you the best results. Traditionally ribeye or top round is used since the marbling gives a beautiful juicy result. If you’re looking for cheaper cuts, read the tips below to learn how to get great results!
Cheese: Since it’s a ‘cheese steak,’ we next need some good cheese! Traditionally, either provolone cheese or Cheez Whiz is used, which is a shelf-stable cheese product that’s commonly sold in jars. Pick either or both, or you can also go for some cheddar cheese.
Onion: Onions elevate the flavor and taste like the classic Philly cheesesteak! We’ll use some yellow onions and caramelize them for that quintessential touch.
Roll: A classic Philly cheesesteak is served on an Amoroso roll, but unless you’re in or near Philly, that’s pretty tricky to come across. So, you can easily use a hoagie roll, ciabatta, or even a burger bun instead for an equally tasty sandwich.
🔪 HOW TO MAKE
Making this classic and delicious sandwich is incredibly easy and simple.
The full instructions are in the recipe card below, but let's look at the main steps to making this treat.
Step 1:
Let’s make our butter spread first. Mix all the ingredients for the butter spread in a small bowl, then slice the bread rolls three-fourths of the way through and spread a layer on one half. Set them aside.
Step 2:
Next, caramelize the onions by cooking them in a hot pan with some oil for 5 to 6 minutes on medium heat. Remove and set it aside as well.
Step 3:
Time to cook the steak! In a very hot pan, add oil and spread the steak onto it evenly. Cook until it turns beautifully brown. Season and flip the steak to the other side. Cook in batches for the best results.
Step 4:
Return the steak and the onion to the pan and mix on medium heat for 5 seconds. Place the cheese on top of the steak, turn off the heat and cover the pan to melt the cheese.
Step 5:
When the cheese melts, fill the rolls with the steak and cheese. Your delicious Philly Cheesesteak is ready to be served.
💭 COOKING TIPS
- I have used cheddar cheese, but you can go for Provolone cheese or the cheese you prefer.
- Instead of ribeye steak, go for a cheaper cut like New York strip or Top Sirloin, and add a teaspoon of butter to the pan with the oil before cooking the steak. It will give it more flavor.
- Although most recipes call for hoagie rolls, you can go for burger buns or ciabatta bread, which will not affect the taste.

This Philly Cheesesteak recipe is perfect as is, but if you want to customize it to make it your own, here are a few ideas you can try:
Veggies: You can add any other veggies you love to this sandwich since it’s extremely versatile. Try adding some bell peppers, mushrooms, or even roasted zucchini.
Spices: If you want to change the flavor, try experimenting with different spices. Paprika or Cajun spice works incredibly well with the flavors in this sandwich.
Cheese: You can go for whichever cheese you love best; I’ve used cheddar cheese here instead of the traditional provolone cheese or Cheez Whiz that’s commonly used.
