Stuffed Pita Bread

stuffed_pitaThis is an Arabic dish found in most Lebanese, Egyptian, and Syrian restaurants. Its name varies depending on which country you are having it in, it’s Hawawshi in Egypt, in Syria it’s called Araies. This grilled sandwich is equivalent of a burger, and is usually served with humus or green salad. Feel free to create your own version by using different spices and herbs. You can also replace the beef with turkey or chicken.


– 1 chopped onion

– 1 chopped tomato

– 2 tablespoons chopped green coriander

– 1/2 kilo minced beef, turkey or chicken

– Olive oil

– Salt to taste

– 1 teaspoon black pepper

– 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (optional)

– 1 teaspoon cumin powder

– 3 Pita bread

1- Mix all the ingredients together, except the bread, in a bowl.

2- Open the bread from one side and fill it with the mixture above.
Make sure the filling is not thick and is spread evenly.

3- Close the bread and pour 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil over the bread, to give
it a special grill taste.

4- Wrap it in aluminum foil – make sure it’s well sealed –
and put it in a preheated oven 350F/180C/Gas mark 4, for 45
minutes to an hour.

5- Cut the bread into quarters & serve with salad.
